The figures - revealed in a Freedom of Information request - shine a light on the wards recording the highest number of violent crimes, which include com¬ mon assaults, grievous bodily harm and sexual offences.
Unsurprisingly, the most troubled ar¬ eas are those in major town centres. Top of the tree is Maidstone’s High Street ward with 1,485 violent crimes between April 2010 and September 2012 - an average of 1.6 per day.
It, like many places on the list, sees figures spike as a result of the night¬ time economy and problems as people spill out of pubs and clubs. Second on the list was Medway’s Riv¬ er Ward with 1,402 reports of violent crime. Again, the ward covers the busy Chatham town centre. Third was Thanet’s Cliftonville West. While the figures may seem alarm¬ ing, community chiefs and police offic¬ ers say they are all committed to bring¬ ing the numbers down. When shown the figures, Police and Crime Commissioner Ann Barnes stressed the county was a safe place to live and that the rate of violent crimes is lower than the national average.
